I have a solid wooden door unfinished before, should I dye or paint?

I have hardwood floors in a Brazilian cherry color. My plate is solid oak with a red mahogany stain. The door is beautiful. I want to make sure I can keep it.

DO NOT !!!!! Stain yet. First, I would it shellac. Shellac dries pretty quickly. You should be able to put three coats in one day. You can put a second layer on without sanding. After the second layer of sand and you must wipe the dust with a tack cloth that can be purchased a center for less than a dollar. If you do not finish after a couple of years, the shellac will be much easier to remove the stain and poly or whatever you use to seal it. Good Luck Moskie257
